Dispensing Thoughts and Opinions: PSU Pro Day

FTB’s Rapid Reaction/Stream of Consciousness Following Two Hours of Watching Guys Mostly Stand Around

  • Well, that’s a chunk of our lives we can’t get back. For those stuck at work wondering ‘What did I miss??!?!?!” first of all, calm down. You didn’t miss much of anything. Yes, Jayson Oweh ran a 4.4 40-yard dash that turned into a 4.37 that turned into a 4.36 (somehow), and yes, Micah Parsons ran a 4.41 that turned into a 4.35 that turned into a 4.39 (???) but easily the most impressive showing belonged to BTN’s Dave Revsine and Howard Griffith for masterfully filling air time when absolutely nothing was going on.

  • Interesting stat: Since 2014 – James Franklin’s first year at Penn State – seven other Power 5 football teams have posted at least three 11-win seasons besides the Nittany Lions. Ohio State. Alabama. Oklahoma. Clemson. Georgia. TCU. Wisconsin. Of those teams, Penn State has produced the lowest number of 1st Round NFL Draft picks in that time – 1, Saquon Barkley. Honestly, I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Depends on how you spin it, I guess. Ohio State and Alabama are tied at the top with 16 1st Rounders. Clemson has 10. Georgia, 8. Oklahoma, 5. What’s surprising, though, is that TCU and Wisconsin have produced 4 and 3 1st Rounders, respectively.

  • According to the fine folks at www.ramptshirts.com — FTB’s favorite and most trusted shirt-centric blog because it appeared first on Google – the average t-shirt weighs between 130 and 150 grams. Apparently, that was too much of an anchor to haul around because most everyone ran shirtless. Makes you wonder why scouts don’t make players perform these drills in full pads? Probably makes too much sense.

  • Running drills right after Jayson Oweh set Holuba Hall’s plastic grass ablaze  must be what it feels like to be a comedian taking the mic after Dave Chappelle just killed it. The announcers joked about Micah Parsons being overshadowed, but imagine being Shaka Toney today? In a vacuum, Toney’s test numbers were great, but compared to his former bookend teammate they appeared pedestrian.

  • Hard not to root for former Penn State OL Steven Gonzalez. Glad he got a chance to go through Pro Day after COVID took the opportunity away last season. And kudos to him for not being too proud to do it after already enduring training camp with the Arizona Cardinals last August. We recently spoke with him for one of our upcoming FTB Throwback videos, and he’s just a great dude. Hoping he sticks on a roster or practice squad this season.

  • Legit question: So is this it? Can pro teams bring prospects to their facility for private workouts like in years past? We tried to find the answer online but failed. If they are permitted, Pat Freiermuth should be a popular invite since he told BTN he’s 2 to 3 weeks away from being full recovered from shoulder surgery.

  • The day ended without a Chris Jones Incident, so that’s a win. For those unaware of what we’re talking about, search at your own risk.
